Michael Marx, Fencing Master

Michael Marx earned his Master of Arms degree in Poland in 1992, and is a staff member of the USFA Coaches College, coaching upper level classes, writing manuals and teaching.

A five-time Olympic team member in 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996, Michael is the only fencer in the last 50 years to make the U.S. Olympic team in two weapons: the epee and the foil; and has been enshrined in the U.S. Fencing Hall of Fame. He is a five-time USOC Athlete of the Year.

In other international honors, Michael earned the silver medal winner at the World University Games in 1985, the highest finish ever for a U.S. team member, and the bronze medal in the 1987 Pan American Games.

At the national level, Michael earned a record eight U.S. national championships in foil in 1977, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990 and 1993.

He served as vice president of the U.S. Fencing Association from 1992 to 1996 and has served as the national women's epee coach. His students have:

  • Earned over 50 national titles, and

  • Competed for the last 4 Olympic teams in both epee and foil.

Michael was Inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2003, the first fencer to be so honored.

Carlos Bruno, Coach

Carlos is a nationally-ranked men's epee competitor and coach. He has been fencing for over 14 years, and has been coaching for over 6 years. Carlos coaches the Pre-Competitive, Pre-Collegiate and Competitive programs, and leads the Evening class.

Lisa Marx, Coach

Lisa holds a Level 2 Coaching Certificate from the United States Fencing Association Coaches College. She was a nationally-ranked women's foil competitor, and is also a certified Personal Trainer and Stott Pilates Instructor. Lisa leads the conditioning for the Pre-Competitive, Pre-Collegiate and Competitive Programs, and leads the Youth and Youth Competitive classes. She also assists with the Homeschool PE and Homeschool Fencing classes.

Barent DuBois, Coach

Barent holds a Level 2 Coaching Certificate from the United States Fencing Association Coaches College and is a 3-weapon competitor. Barent teaches fencing in the French-American International School after-school program, and assists with the Youth and Youth Competitive classes.

Adam Maczik, Coach

Adam is a nationally-ranked men's epee competitor and a high school science teacher. Adam assists with the Youth and Youth Competitive classes.

Seth Baldwin, Coach

Seth was a Division I Men's Epee bronze medalist. He assists with the Competitive and Pre-Collegiate Programs.

Lacey Burt, Lesson Coach

Lacey Burt holds a Level 1 Coaching Certificate in foil and a Level 3 Armorer Certificate from the United States Fencing Association Coaches College. She has been fencing since 2001 and is nationally ranked in Senior Women's Epee.

Aaron Kandlik, Lesson Coach

Aaron holds a Level 4 Coaching Certificate from the United States Fencing Association Coaches College. He is also a strength and conditioning trainer.

Sam Senior, Coach Emeritus

Sam Senior began fencing in Darmstadt, Germany in 1952, training with Czech Master Edward Adamoschek. Member of Lehigh University Fencing Team in 1955. While a member of the Portland State University Team in the '60's, defeated 34 fencers to win the Collegiate Foil Championships. Member of a number of clubs through the years, including Washington, D.C. FC, Salle Auriol Seattle, Salle Auriol Portland, the Nottingham FC, the Darmstadt FC, and the Oregon Fencing Alliance. Lifetime Member of NWFC. Won Oregon Division Foil Championships in 1963, 1970, and 1971. Silver and Bronze medalist in foil and epee, Veteran's Division, National Championships of 1997. Competed in World's Masters Games in 1998, foil and epee. Fencing instructor for over 35 years, most recently at OFA and NWFC.
