2009 Foil & Epee Winter Camp

9:00am-10:00am: Group or Individual Instruction (Optional)
10:00am-12:30pm: Practice
12:30pm-1:30pm: Lunch
1:30pm-4:00pm: Practice
Evening Activity or Optional Bouting


Description:
Camp will consist of advanced skill development and refinement, bouting and conditioning. Camp also includes the famous (or infamous) NWFC New Years Eve party, and a chance to earn your 2010 rating at the New Year’s Open on Jan. 1st.

A limited amount of housing is available with NWFC families. Housing is provided on a first-come basis, based on date of receipt of registration form and deposit. No housing requests will be accepted after December 1. Homestay campers will be met at the airport or train station. Please schedule your arrival no later than 7:00pm on Saturday, December 26, and your departure on Saturday January 2nd (or on Friday January 1st between 7:00-10:00pm.)

Cost is $550.00, which includes camp, homestay (for campers under age 21), meals and the registration fee for the Hangover Open (January 1st). A nonrefundable $50 deposit is required to register; the balance of the camp fee is due on December 27.

Coaches:

  • Michael Marx earned his Master of Arms degree in Poland in 1992. Michael is a five-time U.S. Olympian and the only male fencer in the last 50 years to make the U.S. Olympic team in two weapons: foil and epee. He is a five-time USOC Athlete of the Year and earned a record eight U.S. national championships in foil. He has coached the 1997-2003 Cadet, Junior and Senior World Championship teams and has had students on four of the previous Olympic teams. He has been inducted into both the USFA and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.

  • Sebastien Dos Santos is the current U.S. National Coach for Men's Epee. He was a member of the French National Modern Pentathlon team and is a four-time national champion and international gold medalist. Sebastien was the head coach for the 2004 French Women's Modern Pentathlon Olympic team and the 2008 Brazilian Modern Pentathlon team.

  • Simon Abram was a fencing master in Aix en Provence, France. He earned his Master of Arms degree in Paris when he was 21. He is a two-time French National Team Championship bronze medalist and the captain of the 2009 Men's Foil U.S. National Championship winning team. He was a member of the French Junior National Team from 2002 to 2005.

  • Carlos Bruno has been fencing for the past 15 years and is nationally ranked in Men's Epee. He has been coaching at NWFC for the past four years.

  • Darius Wei is a former coach at the University of Rochester and has been a coach at NWFC for the past two years. He is a level 2 certified fencing coach from the USFA Coaches' College.

Guest Coaches:

  • Seth Kelsey has been fencing for over 16 years. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2003. He was a member of the 2003 and 2007 Pan American Team. In addition, Seth was a member of the 2004 and 2008 U.S. Olympic fencing team. He has won three world cups and zonal championships, the first American to do either. Seth is currently ranked 1st in the U.S. and 10th in the world.

  • Cody Mattern was a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic fencing team. He is a five-time national champion and a world up silver and bronze medalist. Cody has trained and coached at NWFC since 1996 and is currently a member of the Army's World Class Athlete Program.
