A letter from Michael McTigue-

Change is in the air. It’s the time of year when we feel the warm sunny days coming, smell the freshening breeze, and see the crocuses, daffodils, and camellias blooming. Like the first warm days of spring, change is something to be welcomed.

Change is something we’ve become familiar with at Northwest Fencing Center. There’s been a lot over the last 5 years, from COVID to moving into our new home. I’m very proud that this  community always asked ourselves, “How can we use this change to improve things?”  We’ve always found a way to do that. Every community member should hold their head up high for taking that approach.

I want us to hold onto that spirit and admirable approach to change as I announce that I will retire from my executive director role. This is an excellent opportunity for Northwest to find someone to help take us to the next level. The board has engaged a professional search firm to assist. The whole staff will also be involved, and I’ve committed to staying on until the right person is found. Reach out to the board or me if you think you know someone who would be a good fit.

When I talk to folks around the center, I’m surprised how few know that I was born 68 years ago or that I first fell in love with fencing before some of our intermediate fencers’ parents were even born! Taken in that light, it’s not a surprise that it’s time for a change in my life. It’s time to slow down a little, make time in my life for my new grandson, and explore new things. Don’t worry, though, I’m not moving to the Bahamas. I plan to stay here part-time in my original role as coach.

Being here and working with all of you has been a great privilege. I’m grateful for all you’ve shown me. This special community attracts special people from all over the world. I’m confident that it’ll attract someone special now.

Change is in the air. You can feel it, and it feels good.
